This course is intended to help aspiring poets discover new poetic techniques.  It will involve exploration of storytelling in poetry, imagery and getting the sounds right.  It will also involve consistent reference to editing and polishing work.  You will be advised on sending off work to current paper and online markets for poetry.  There will be in-class exercises, reading work out to enhance performance skills, and shared peer feedback.

This course looks at sources that can be used as inspiration for poetry, including family history and old photographs, vintage fashion, domestic interiors and exteriors, visual sources from art and design, objects and small ‘found’ items.  The tutor will bring in objects and pictures (and sometimes encourage students to do so) and will draw on her work for national art galleries and museums.  The course will include exercises, reading aloud, peer feedback, and advice on crafting and polishing work.  It will also include ideas for sending work out to appropriate literary markets (both print and online)

Young adult fiction is often read by adults as well as younger people.  We shall explore the particular challenges and requirements of this range of writing, create suitable characters and situations, use memories and exercises to kick-start ideas, and develop suitable styles and voices.  The course will be informal and friendly.  There will be writing exercises and discussion, we’ll look at examples and there will be short projects to follow up at home.

This course will show you how to produce lively, well-written reviews, and to share your enthusiasm or disappointment at what you have seen on stage, screen or in a gallery.  You will learn how to request free reviewer tickets to gigs, shows and exhibitions, then how to carry out and use your research leaving your readers entertained and informed.  We will look at legal pitfalls and how to go about getting published.   You will learn by looking at examples of reviews and analysing how they work, group discussion, practical tasks, peer feedback and one-to-one feedback from the tutor.

The only way to learn the craft of the novelist is to write a novel.  This course will make the process of writing and editing easier and more enjoyable.  You will share work in progress, receive constructive feedback from the group and tutor, hear aspiring novelists sharing their work and offer your own feedback to them.

Opportunities for publication and performance of short stories are increasing.  This friendly specialised workshop will focus mainly on students’ own stories-in-progress with sharing in class, tutor-led peer feedback and discussion, plus occasional writing exercises and tasks to complete at home. 

WRITERS’ SUMMER SCHOOL

For beginner or more experienced writers                                                  

Week beginning Monday 20th August:  Attend a course for 2 hours a day every day from Monday to Friday across a single week.  This inspiring summer school format has proved popular in recent years.

Over the past year, there has been an explosion of Flash Theatre:  mini plays, complete stories told in just 10 minutes, “beautifully-crafted bursts of drama, insights into what theatre does best – takes us away, excites, surprises, tantalises us in from of our very eyes”,  Kevin Dyer, Playwright.

This intensive course will equip you with the tools to create the characters, narrative and structure required to tell a complete story in just 10 minutes.  Sessions will combine tuition, discussion and creative exercises to stimulate and develop ideas into your very own piece of Flash Theatre.

Love it and Learn it!  A chance to learn how Anglo-Saxons, 18th century fops, away-with-the-fairies Victorians and friends of Shakespeare wrote poetry, and then to do it yourself.   A history of English poetry full of fun with exercises to do in groups.  This course will help you know more, and find out more ways to write what you like in poetry, and will give you plenty of chances to try it all out.
